URBAN MYTH: There is an urban myth circulating that claims that if you’re abducted and forced to go to your ATM or robbed at an ATM, that you should enter your PIN number in reverse and that will sound a silent alarm that will notify the police or other law enforcement officials.
STATUS: False, for now. The technology exists which would allow ATM users to contact police in an emergency by punching in their PIN (personal identification number) in reverse, but as of this writing it has not yet been implemented anywhere in the United States.
Wyandotte CU wants to remind members that PIN reversal is NOT a valid security option if you find yourself in distress at the ATM.
